Sweet Home Samford

LIV RIVERA

I walked up to The Famous Fair Oaks Pharmacy in South Pasadena, CA. I nervously opened the door and my Dad and I entered the building. We were there to meet my Samford Admission Counselor, Hunter. We saw him and sat down at a small table. He ordered a sandwich, my dad got a burger and I got my favorite hot fudge brownie sundae. As we ate, Hunter told us about Samford. This was my first college meeting.

The more Hunter told us about the events, sports, career opportunities and traditions at Samford, the more my Dad and I loved it. Just as I was deciding whether I could picture myself at Samford, there was a pause in the conversation...and faintly playing in the busy restaurant was "Sweet Home Alabama" by Lynyrd Skynyrd! At that moment I knew Samford was the place for me. It had everything I was looking for: a warm community, fun traditions, a great business school and a Christian foundation. My dad and I left that meeting completely sold. I knew Samford was my first choice. However, I still applied to 12 other schools.

A few months later, I found out that I had gotten into 11 out of the 13 total schools I applied to. Samford was my number one but I still wanted to see all of the schools in person before making my final decision. So, my Mom and I went on a huge college road trip, beginning in Texas and ending in Washington D.C. We saw so many schools, spent the night at each one and attended all of the events, but I couldn't see myself attending any of them until I spent the night at Samford. Upon entering the gates of campus, both my jaw and my Mom’s jaw dropped. It was so beautiful. It was everything I had hoped for! Everyone was so warm and welcoming and the student I stayed with was such a great host. At the end of our visit, my mom and I were convinced that Samford was the perfect school for me.

As a current student, I am so glad I decided to make Samford my home. During my time here I have attended so many fun events, picked up a great job on campus, and received quality education. I have stepped out of my comfort zone in so many ways. In just this short time at Samford, I have grown spiritually, academically and personally. I knew from the beginning that Samford was the right choice for me. I hope that it's the right choice for you and that I’ll see you all next year!
