Distance Makes the Heart Grow Fonder: JanTerm 2018
Distance makes the heart grow fonder is a popular saying that I’ve never really understood. Even though this phrase seems cliche, I understood the truth of it during JanTerm. When I was home, I really missed my second home at Samford! Don’t get me wrong, it was great to have a break from school and spend extra time with family and friends. However, by the middle of January, I was ready to go back to school!
One of the reasons I was excited to come back to Samford was to see friends. The community at Samford is amazing! Over JanTerm I missed hanging with people in Ben Brown Plaza and chatting with my friends while walking to classes. The community at Samford makes it one of my favorite places in the world. It has been great catching up with friends and hearing about how they spent their breaks!
Another reason I was looking forward to coming back to Samford was the weather here. I’m from Fort Wayne, Indiana where it gets very cold and cloudy in the winter. While I was home, I often checked the temperature in Birmingham. It was always much warmer. It’s amazing how sunshine can make a normal day so much better. It was a wonderful seventy degrees and sunny the day I came back to campus!
In addition to seeing friends and enjoying the warmer weather, I was excited to start Step Sing practices. As many of you are aware, Step Sing is a favorite tradition at Samford. Different groups from around campus perform songs and dances in a big show for the Birmingham community and the proceeds support charity. Practice for Step Sing is in full swing right now. I can’t wait to see the result of all the hard work different groups have put into their shows!
