Freshman Year Expectations

I think I can speak for every freshman when I say that entering college was a life-changing experience. The first year of college has definitely been a whirlwind of change. When I was entering freshman year, I had no idea what to expect. I didn’t know if I would be homesick, excel in all my classes or get involved like I had been in high school, but what I did know was I was ready to take on this next chapter of life. As weird as it sounds, now that I’m close to ending my freshman year, it’s awesome to reflect and inform incoming students on what to expect their first year of college. With that being said, I now present Jacob’s Top 3 Expectations for Freshman Year!

  1. Expect to be pushed out of your comfort zone. - The first year of college forces you to say hi to that person you saw on Instagram before college started or join that intramural sport you’ve wanted to join since you heard about it during Connections weekend. Although it’s a very daunting situation, college pushes to make connections that you usually wouldn’t make due to the circumstances that occur freshman year. However, you’ll be pleasantly surprised when you allow yourself to go outside your comfort zone, so don’t be scared to reach out to people because, in actuality, we’re all in the same boat.

  2. Expect to be surrounded by people who care for you. - There are going to be times you experience homesickness or loneliness. However, Samford is the best place to experience this because Samford’s community is there for you whenever you need them. Samford is amazing with creating comfortability among students and faculty which is the main reason why I chose to attend Samford. There will never be a time at Samford when you don’t feel cared about because Samford makes it a priority for everyone to feel loved.

  3. Expect to love Samford more than you already do. - This was the most surprising to me because coming into Samford, it was my dream school. I thought there was no way possible to love the school more than I did once getting my admission. Since arriving to Samford, I have had the absolute best time and fell in love with the campus and people over and over again! Being a part of such an amazing community compels you to truly love Samford in every way possible. If I could do freshman year all over again, I would do it in a heartbeat!

I just want to close by saying first year of college truly is what you make it. Don’t be afraid to be who you truly are, and freshman year will be the best year of your life! Enjoy the small things because your first year of college flies by!
